If you’re planning a career as a lawyer or if you just enrolled in the Law School, you are most likely to have a lot of expenses at the start. So, it is necessary to cut any unnecessary costs wherever possible.
Most of the time, you can settle for the cheap laptop, but that won’t serve you for too long and you would eventually have to replace it in the near future, which is why this is not the best option.
Also, keep in mind that buying a used laptop will save you a lot of money, but it will cause a lot of trouble elsewhere since you probably won’t have a proper guarantee which means that every time something breaks down or you have an issue, you will have to pay for the repair service yourself.
When we take into consideration all of the above, what you need is a laptop that will last for at least 3 years, while being in the range of reasonable budget, but still being powerful enough so that it won’t hold you back.
Here is a short overview of minimal requirements:
- AMD, Intel, or anything else. Brands don’t matter that much in your case. You just want a dual-core processor with at least 2-2.5 GHz and you will be just fine. Don’t get something too powerful, since more power means more energy consumption, which means less battery life
- You need 8 GB of RAM to ensure smooth multitasking. Everything above that is just a luxury
- Storage unit with at least 256 GB. Keep in mind that system files take 30-50 GB, so that leaves you with 200 GB for your documents, PDFs and other stuff. But if you want to store some multimedia stuff such as music or movies, you will need more. Also, an SSD is preferable, as it will save you a lot of time when it comes to booting and loading
- The display is not so important for you as you are not doing any image/video editing. As long as you have at least 13″, and pretty much all laptops do, you’re good to go
- A keyboard should be nice and smooth, and comfortable to work with, as you will type a lot. So, be on a lookout for that, and if you can get a backlit keyboard, even better
- Battery life and weight are also really important. You need at least 5-6 hours of battery life to last through the day. And preferably, something lighter than 5 pounds, as you will carry it a lot
