We have recently reviewed some of the best laptops for writers and bloggers, and while Chromebooks might not seem suitable for writers at first, the truth is that a Chromebook can actually be a great companion if you only need a mobile device for typing and taking notes, and most of the time you don’t need to install any specific programs. Not only are Chromebooks affordable, but some of them also come with great keyboards, which makes them perfect for writers.
But before proceeding to our list of the best Chromebooks for writers, let’s first see why and when you should consider a Chromebook, and also list some of the differences between Chromebooks and regular laptops.
What is a Chromebook and what makes Chromebooks great for writers?
Unlike traditional laptops that run Windows or Mac OS, Chromebooks run Google’s Chrome OS. These machines are mainly designed to be connected to the internet, with most apps and documents staying in the cloud. Unlike traditional laptops, Chromebooks are not designed to handle heavy tasks and do not support many apps.
Chromebooks on the other hand are very affordable, with prices starting as low as 150$. They are also available in different screen formats ranging from 11 to 15 inches. Because of their limits in terms of software and hardware, Chromebooks are very secure machines, which explains why they are popular in schools and as a laptop for kids.
For writers and bloggers who like to work remotely, a Chromebook can be perfect fit. Chromebooks are fast, have an amazing battery life, and a lot of them come with great keyboards.
On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of people bash Chromebooks and call them useless…etc, while Chromebooks were not meant for them in the first place. If you spend most of your time online only use your laptop for emails, browsing, and typing, then a Chromebook will be just fine for what you want to do. On the other hand, if you need to use a specific windows program, or if you are used to a windows computer, then there are better options for you.
Here are some of the differences between Chromebooks and traditional laptops:
Chromebooks | Traditional Laptops |
Run Google’s Chrome OS | Run Windows, Mac OS or Linux |
Some Chromebooks can run Android Apps (but very few apps are optimized for Chromebooks) | Support gazillions of apps and programs |
Limited hardware options | A lot of choice when it comes to hardware |
Security | Windows has long been a known target for viruses. |
Very affordable with prices starting as low as 150$ | Prices vary according to the specs |
Exceptional Battery life (most Chromebooks can get you 8 hours of use) | Battery life is average, and only higher end ultrabooks offer a higher battery life |
What to look for in a Chromebook for writing and blogging?
As you might already know, Chromebooks are still relatively new to the market, and they don’t offer as many features as traditional laptops. Most Chromebooks nowadays come with 4GB of RAM, a low voltage processor, and a small solid state drive. This configuration is actually more than enough for Chromebooks, and you won’t have any problems typing on a Chromebook with 4GB RAM. Because unlike Windows, Chrome OS does a very good job when it comes to RAM management.
What you need to pay attention to is actually the keyboard. Since most Chromebooks are relatively small, this might affect the size of the keys too. So have a close look at the keyboard before buying. Also, if you need a full keyboard, only a few 15 inch Chromebooks offer that currently.
However, what will really make a a huge difference when typing is the travel distance. Travel distance refers to the distance the keys move when you press them. Generally speaking, any travel distance of 2mm and more is good for a laptop. But when it comes to Chromebooks, it’s hard to find one that offers that; since most Chromebooks are very thin. But that is no deal breaker, because a lot of Chromebooks come with great keyboards even if they don’t offer such key travel distance!
